'Puppy Revenge'
[Mushing humour from 'An Alaskan Abroad: the misadventures of a reformed Alaskan musher/journalist
and his Siberian husky/wolf hybrid, as they exchange the wilds of Alaska for the feral pubs of Prague,
Czechoslovakia']

Here's something to give pause to dog mushers who kill unwanted puppies with a gun.

Jerry Allan Bradford of Florida is in hospital this weekend recovering from a gunshot wound. Bradford
was using a handgun to dispatch seven mixed-breed puppies when one of the puppies was able to get its
paw on the trigger. The gun went off, shooting Bradford in the wrist. Four of the puppies survived and
police have charged Bradford with animal cruelty.

Assuming Bradford took no pleasure from killing the animals and that he actually did try and fail to find
them homes, what else was he supposed to do? He could have turned them over to the city's animal
control officer or the Humane Society, which in turn would have ended up doing almost the exact same
thing. Bradford is now up on charges for animal cruelty.

I've volunteered at the Humane Society and dead is dead, whether it comes from a syringe or the end of a
gun. At least Bradford had the balls to do the job himself.

I always find shooting too disturbing and violent, though.

I drowned them instead.
